The timeless elegance of Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story (“Emerald Hill”) 小娘惹之翡翠山 is set to come to life beyond the screen as Mediacorp partners Peranakan Museum in celebrating the vibrant tapestry of Peranakan heritage, with a selection of sarong kebayas from the period blockbuster now part of the museum’s collection.
This donation from Mediacorp underscores its commitment to champion Singapore stories, using entertainment as a gateway to foster deeper engagement with Singapore’s cultural heritage and traditions. Premiering later this month as part of Mediacorp’s SG60 programming slate, Emerald Hill unfolds against the backdrop of a wealthy Peranakan family, weaving a narrative of ambition, love, and betrayal.
Central to this world are the sarong kebayas worn by the characters, each piece designed by Raymond Wong, veteran kebaya maker of Rumah Kim Choo and Steward of Intangible Cultural Heritage in close collaboration with Tee Yu Yan, Senior Image Stylist, Mediacorp to reflect the unique character of each “Little Nyonya” and the rich tradition of Peranakan culture.
Once showcased only on screen, four of these sarong kebayas – as worn by Tasha Low as Zhang Xin Niang, Chantalle Ng as Zhang An Na, Ferlyn G as Zhou Hong Yu and Jeanette Aw as Yue Niang – are now on display in the Performing Identity showcase at the Peranakan Museum’s Fashion Gallery, a section dedicated to the role of costume in Peranakan theatre and television. As visitors take a rare glimpse into the artistry of costume design and its deep cultural significance, the intricate motifs adorning each kebaya – from embroidered swallows and rabbits to pineapples – will offer a subtle glimpse into the characters’ identities and journeys.

Alongside the sarong kebayas, intricately beaded shoes, delicate camisoles, and a series poster signed by the cast have also been donated, offering a window into to the artistry and tradition woven into Emerald Hill, premiering 17 years after its beloved predecessor first captivated audiences. Virginia Lim, Chief Content Officer, Mediacorp, said: “Mediacorp is proud to partner with the Peranakan Museum to bring the legacy of Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story beyond the screen and into the real world. Every stitch, bead, and embroidery on these elegant sarong kebayas holds a story – not just of the characters who wore them in the show, but of the skilled artisans behind them and the traditions that inspired their design.
"Now part of Peranakan Museum’s collection, they continue to be vessels of storytelling, carrying narratives of tradition and ambition that bridge fiction and reality. We hope they will captivate audiences as the series premieres, and continue to inspire in years to come.” Clement Onn, Director of Asian Civilisations Museum and Peranakan Museum, said: “We are excited to partner with Mediacorp for the launch of Emerald Hill -The Little Nyonya Story together with this year’s Armenian Street Party, and to welcome the sarong kebayas and its accessories into our National Collection."
He continues that "This underscores our commitment to collecting contemporary expressions that showcase the living heritage and relevance of Peranakan culture to our audiences. It is through such opportunities that we are able to keep the artistry of Peranakan culture alive. Together with Peranakan communities, we invite visitors to experience and celebrate the art, intangible cultural heritage and craftsmanship embodied in the wearing and designing of the kebaya, through programmes like Armenian Street Party which brings Armenian Street to life as a creative craft precinct with food, fashion, music and more.”
